Developing and enhancing the concept and vocabulary of body sensations using Rudolph (and other well known Christmas characters).
Using images and prior knowledge as stimuli, pupils explored the body sensations of well known Christmas characters. In this example, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is used.
The practitioner used a stock image of Rudolph with a large red nose to spark the children’s interest in the lesson. The class then sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, before reflecting on Rudolph’s known body sensations (red cog): red nose, very shiny nose, glows. Pupils were given a copy of the Body Sensations word bank (from the Training Booklet) and asked to identify synonyms to describe a red, shiny, glowing nose. Each pupil then wrote a synonym of their choosing on a red cog nose and attached it to the image of Rudolph, creating a festive body sensation display.
This lesson idea could be repeated with other festive characters, like Frosty the Snowman, or Santa when he got stuck up the chimney (tickly nose).
