Creating an Emotion Works Christmas Tree with Cog Baubles

Unpacking Christmas emotions using a festive 5 cog model.

Look at the Emotion Works baubles on this ‘Cog Christmas tree’!

P1-3 pupil nurture groups created Cog Christmas Trees by hand painting leaves, finger printing berries and decorating with colourful chains of “cog baubles”. Pupils already understood each of the 5 main cog concepts and could link these to explore simple emotions.

Children were asked to describe how they felt about Christmas. They recorded one emotion word, body sensation, behaviour, trigger and regulation strategy in each of the cogs on the cog photocopiable worksheet. These were then coloured in in the correct cog colours, and linked together before being “hung” on the tree.

This is a really quick and effective way to work through the cogs and to create a colourful display.

As a follow up, pupils made “presents” linking emotion words and triggers. See how in the links.
