Enhancing Emotional Word Vocabulary in the Middle Years

An interactive way to extend and enhance emotion word (orange cog) vocabulary with middle and upper pupils.

Pupils in this P4/5 class were introduced to the orange Emotion Words Cog using simple emotion words like happy, sad, bored, scared and angry. The simple vocabulary ensured they understood the orange cog concept.

In this follow up lesson, children created a class thesaurus for emotion words. On the front of each orange envelope is an emotion word and emoji. The children wrote synonyms for the emotion words on lollipop sticks and placed them inside. Whenever pupils come across a new emotion word that means the same as one of those on display, they add it to the display.

The children really enjoyed creating this resource and use it regularly in literacy task to support them with both reading and writing. t
