Mr Ancient (Extended Writing using Mr Men stimulus)
Using the Mr Men and the 5 part model to explore emotions and compose an extended piece of writing.
This example takes a popular stimulus, and one of our online lesson ideas (Mr Jelly), and uses these to create an extended piece of writing with upper school pupils.
A colleague had successfully used the Mr Men book series to explore emotions, which pupils had very much enjoyed. Inspired by this and having previously taught the 5 main cogs individually, the practitioner used the 5 part model to plan a series of extended writing lessons.
The practitioner used the Vocabulary Planning Tool to think about the vocabulary that might crop up during the lessons and new words that could be introduced.
As a class, the children explored the cogs using the ‘Mr Jelly’ practice idea. Pupils then worked in mixed-ability pairs to read Mr Men books. They put their “coggles” on and explored the cogs using the 5-part Cog Worksheet. Visuals were used to help those with additional support needs. Pupils then shared their ideas with the whole class.
The writing challenge followed: Create a piece of emotional writing…. Your own ‘Mr Men’ story! A visual of the 5-part model was displayed on the Smartboard to support the discussion of cogs during planning stage. Children then used 5-part noteboard worksheets to individually plan their stories. The key emotional vocabulary from these was then used in writing individual Mr Men style stories.
Those with additional support years continued to use symbol supports during the planning and writing stages, which enabled this lesson to be truly inclusive for all.
