How to use well known song lyrics to explore the 5 part model.
This simple idea allows practitioners and pupils to explore the 5 main cog concepts using a festive stimulus. It also supports reading comprehension and could be used to support an extended writing task.
Children were given the lyrics to well known Christmas songs, including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, as in this example. They already had a good understanding of the 5 main cog concepts and the language linked to each cog. They used coloured pens to underline the appropriate vocabulary for each of the cogs.
At the end of the highlighting task, pupils shared their ideas with classmates to create a shared list for each of the 5 cogs.
