News time discussion prompt using the 4-part model and a photo stimulus – provided as a pdf slideshow with a worksheet to print out for a follow up task
Show the photo on slide 1 and see where the discussion goes.
Who went sledging in the snow? Did they like it? What other snow activities did everyone do? What do they not like about the snow.
eg. Did they get cold? Did they get numb fingers and toes? Talk about body sensations linked to feeling cold.
Show slide 2 which shows the 4-part cog model.
Use the photo as a prompt to teach about the cogs (if you haven’t already), or if learners are already familiar with them have a discussion about the different cogs shown.
Identify the trigger experience – sledging
Capture any mentions of emotion words – happy, excited, thrill, fun. Browse the symbol book orange pages to consider more words. Might she be nervous?
What body sensations do you think she’s feeling? cold on her face, tight in her arms and hands, excited in her tummy
What is she doing to show how she feels? smiling, open mouth, holding tight. What noise might she be making? screaming, shrieking. What might she say and do when the sledge stops?
Show slide 3 and summarise the sequence of the girl’s emotional moment using the 4 cog spaces
Show slide 4 and show the page printed out. Set a task for everyone to draw a picture of something about being out in the snow that they like or don’t like, and then write something in the 4 cogs areas to describe the trigger, body sensations, emotion words and behaviours. Share their work and tell their story to a partner or with the group when finished.
EXTRA IDEA! find another photograph that captures a different kind of emotional moment and use to prompt further cog discussions and related tasks.
