The Lonely Giraffe

‘The Lonely Giraffe’ story book by Peter Blight was used with a P1 class to introduce the Emotion Words cog, then later to demonstrate links with Body Sensations and Behaviours.

“We read the book, the Lonely Giraffe and were able to identify the different feelings the giraffe and the other animals experienced throughout the story. We named the words and I wrote them down on a post-it and stuck them to the front cover of the book. I said these words are ‘Emotion Words’ (or ‘Feeling Words’). We talked about how words can be written down, or spoken out loud. The children took turns ‘reading’ and saying the emotion words out loud.”

The worksheet was created by the teacher and helps set out how the 3 cogs link up. The children demonstrated their learning by colouring the cogs correctly and then drawing pictures to correspond with a 3 part link in the story (emotion word-behaviour-body sensation).

Follow up work using cogs cut out from the ‘Empty Cog Activity Sheet‘ encouraged children to compose a similar cog sequence relating to an emotional experience of their own.

Further information about this lesson is detailed in Pauline McKibben’s practitioner accreditation example on our Capacity Building Page/Accreditation Pathways page.
