Mad Stories: Using the first 5 cogs to sequence Emotional Story Writing

After discussing instances when something happened to make them angry, this teacher used a set of cog cut outs and the 5 part model to help pupils compose an ‘angry story’ picture book.

The 5 Cog Model was introduced over a series of lessons using the 5 Cog System Slideshow.

Next, the class used the 5 Cog Model to plan and write a short, personal story. They focused on one Emotion Word (Mad) and used the other 4 cogs to add detail to the story. After discussing instances when something happened to make them angry, this teacher used a set of cog cut outs to help pupils compose an ‘angry story’ picture book. The cogs were used as planning prompts and each page was colour coded to represent a different cog concept: Children were encouraged to draw a picture and write at least one sentence about each of the cogs on the appropriate page.
