Using Music (and ICT) to Support Orange Cog Understanding

How a music specialist used music to support Emotion Word (Orange Cog) knowledge and development.

As part of a whole school immersion approach to Emotion Works, the music specialist from Boreston Primary in Stirling created an emotional playlist for pupils and staff.

Using the Emotion Words symbols from the Interactive Symbol Display as the backdrop, she created an interactive screen with links to emotionally evocative pieces of music.

Here is her playlist in more detail:

Happy: Pharrell Williams: ‘Happy’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbZSe6N_BXs

Yuck/Disgust: Pick your own.

Relaxed: Edvard Grieg: ‘Peer Gynt Suit: Morning Mood’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rh8gMvzPw0

Upset: Edvard Grieg: ‘Peer Gynt Suit: Death of Ase’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aKxf1h5r4g

Scared/frightened: Edvard Grieg: ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLp_Hh6DKWc

Excited: The Lion King: ‘I Just Can’t Wait to be King’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bGjlvukgHU

Bored/fed up: John Cage: ‘4’33’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTEFKFiXSx4

Surprised/shocked: Johann Strauss II: ‘Thunder and Lightning Waltz’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qESekH-Z1E

Shy/embarrassed: pick your own (perhaps Embarrassment by Madness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpN_TOP9hg8)

Angry/mad: Beethoven: ‘Fifth Symphony, First Movement’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7pQytF2nak

Are there any other songs you would add to your own emotions playlist?

Thanks to Mairi White and Sheena McLean, Music Specialists at Borestone Primary for sharing this idea.
